Under the franchise agreement implementing SBMC Ch. 6.500, E.J. Harrison & Sons provides two free bulky-item pickups per year to each residential subscriber, four items per pickup (8 items/year total). Bulky items are large household goods that won't fit in the trash cart: appliances, furniture, mattresses, tires, and carpet rolls. Pickup is by appointment only — items left at the curb without scheduling are illegal dumping under SBMC §6.100.040.
Bulky-item service is provided at no extra charge to active residential customers. Each customer may request up to two pickups per calendar year, with a maximum of four discarded large items per pickup — for example, a sofa, a refrigerator, a mattress, and a stack of tires. Acceptable items include: large household appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators — note Freon must be intact), furniture (sofas, tables, dressers), mattresses and box springs, carpet (rolled and tied, max 4 ft sections), tires (rim removed, max 4 per pickup), and similar large items requiring special handling. Not accepted at the curb: household hazardous waste (paint, batteries, motor oil — goes to Gold Coast Recycling, 5275 Colt St., or the monthly HHW event), electronic waste (free drop-off at Gold Coast Recycling with ID), construction debris (requires a roll-off bin), and yard waste (use the green cart). Schedule pickups at 805-647-1414 or ejharrison.com. Items must be placed at the curb the morning of the scheduled pickup, not earlier.
Setting bulky items at the curb without an appointment is illegal dumping under SBMC §6.100.040 (Rubbish disposal). Code Enforcement may issue $100/$200/$500 administrative fines and bill the property owner for removal costs. Setting out HHW, e-waste, or construction debris in a bulky pickup is prohibited and the items will be left, with a tag indicating proper disposal location.
