Section 10-6 opens by directing the Board of Public Works to 'institute weekly curbside collection of household rubbish materials from residential dwelling units,' covering single-family through five-unit buildings, and collection is limited to material fitting the Code's definition of 'acceptable curbside collected rubbish' at § 10-2, meaning solid waste generated at a residential dwelling that a state-approved facility is allowed to accept and that the board has not restricted. The Department of Public Works schedules the weekly pickup day itself, and both the director of public works and the board may revise or move a collection day 'from time to time or as required due to city holidays.' The service is tied to residential status: any property receiving curbside rubbish collection as of January 1, 2018 is classified residential unless the board says otherwise, and an owner who converts a residential property to commercial, industrial or condominium use must notify the department within thirty days, after which the city can suspend or end curbside service to that address.

Nonresidential properties, defined elsewhere in the chapter as commercial or industrial facilities, nonprofits, condominiums and apartment buildings of more than five units, do not receive this weekly residential service and must arrange their own collection or use the transfer station under § 10-8.
