Greensboro's solid waste code addresses dumpster (stationary container) service in Code of Ordinances Sec. 25-14, covering any residential complex or business not eligible for curbside cart pickup. The city-approved container must run six to eight cubic yards and cannot exceed 8,000 pounds of gross weight once filled, anything heavier risks damaging the collection truck's lifting arm, so the solid waste manager or designee can refuse service on an overloaded box. D-2075: the pad must sit on an all-weather street or alley strong enough for the collection vehicle, positioned so the driver can back in, service the container and pull out without leaving the cab or making extra maneuvers, and it cannot be blocked by gates, fixed objects or low-hanging wires. Any spillage or overflow not caused by a city crew must be cleaned up immediately by the property owner or occupant; spills the crew itself causes are the crew's own responsibility. Multi-family properties are scaled by unit count, a minimum of one six-cubic-yard container per complex of 8 through 16 units, one eight-cubic-yard container for 17 through 24 units, and additional containers in the same ratio above 25 units.

These sizing rules bind any building permitted, altered or converted after April 16, 1996; complexes built before December 1, 1984 may instead use individual city-approved carts if the whole property receives the same service type. Business units trigger the same container mandate once refuse volume between collections exceeds two 90-gallon automated carts (180 gallons total), with size set by the solid waste manager.
