Troup County, GA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Sec. 9.16(2)(a) requires all trash containment devices, including waste grease containers, compactors and dumpsters, to be located and designed so they are not visible from adjacent roads, streets and properties, and (2)(b) requires the containment area itself to be enclosed so it cannot be seen from off-site. The enclosure must stand at least eight feet tall, or two feet taller than the tallest container inside, whichever is greater, under (2)(c). Under (2)(d), the enclosure must be built of opaque material compatible with the principal building's design and colors, specifically masonry with solid metal gates, and if the interior would otherwise be visible, the enclosure is painted or stained black or dark brown.

Gates must stay in good working order and be kept closed whenever the dumpster is not in use, per (2)(e), and containment areas must sit in the rear or side yard under (2)(f). Temporary, unenclosed construction trash and recycling dumpsters are allowed only until a certificate of occupancy is issued, under (2)(i), after which full screening applies. In the commercial and industrial corridor overlay specifically, (2)(j) requires dumpster enclosures to be gated and built of material matching the primary building. These standards were adopted by Ord. No. 2025-03 as part of the County's landscaping and buffering article.
