Woodbridge, NJ Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Code § 25-11.2 requires anyone placing or using a dumpster in a public area, defined to include streets, sidewalks, highways, lanes, rights-of-way, easements, alleys and public parking lots, to first get a permit under N.J.S.A. 27:51-1. The Township's Building Department serves as the licensing office and processes applications for a $50 fee, requiring the applicant to specify the exact location, size and capacity of the dumpster and how long it is needed (§ 25-11.3). A permit issues for up to 30 days if the site will not block traffic flow, interfere with safety sight lines, or create an unsafe condition, and it can be renewed for another 30 days for an additional $50, but never if it would conflict with a scheduled community event (§ 25-11.3).

Size is capped at 40 cubic yards, and the dumpster cannot sit in the public area more than 72 hours before construction starts or more than 72 hours after it finishes (§ 25-11.4(a)-(b)). Dumpsters on public streets must also comply with the Township's parking ordinances, must stay leak-proof, rust-free and structurally sound, and the permit holder pays for any cleanup or repair the dumpster causes, plus sweeping the area clean once it is removed (§ 25-11.4). The Business Administrator can waive everything but the safety requirement for Township contractors, and the Director of Police enforces the section as the designated enforcement agency (§§ 25-11.1, 25-11.4(e)).
