Upper Darby, PA Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Two nearly identical provisions in the Refuse Collection and Recycling article handle holidays. Section 461-17E covers ashes and rubbish: should the regular date of collection fall on a legal holiday, ashes and rubbish may not be placed out for collection until the evening of such holiday, for collection the following working day. Section 461-20D applies the same shift to recyclables, so a household does not set either bin out on the holiday itself; both wait until evening, and the truck comes the next working day instead of the regularly scheduled one.

Because the ordinance does not name Township-observed holidays or publish a shifted calendar in the code text itself, residents have to watch for the Township's published holiday collection notices, the same maps and schedules on file at the Department of Public Works that set ordinary routes under Section 461-17A, to know which specific dates trigger the shift in a given year. The rule exists to keep crews and offices, which are closed on the holiday, from having to run a normal route that day, while still guaranteeing pickup happens on the next working day rather than being skipped for the week entirely.

A household that guesses wrong about whether a given Monday counts as the shifted holiday risks an early set-out under the ordinary eight-hour placement rule instead.
