Carmel runs a citywide residential trash and recycling program serviced weekly by Republic Services under a contract that began January 1, 2024. Every household gets up to three carts at the monthly rate; trash and single-stream recycling are both collected weekly. The 2026 monthly rate is $16.03 per the city's utility schedule.
Carmel operates a mandatory citywide residential trash and recycling program rather than leaving collection to a county solid waste district. The City Council approved a new contract effective January 1, 2024, awarding weekly trash and curbside recycling service to Republic Services. The program is required of all residents within city limits and is billed monthly through Carmel Utilities; the published rate schedule lists $14.70 in 2024, $15.35 in 2025 and $16.03 in 2026, rising in later years. Each household may have up to three carts at the monthly price, with additional carts at $6.75 each per month, and carts are available in 96-gallon and 65-gallon sizes. Both trash and recycling are collected weekly on the same day, which residents look up by address through Republic Services' schedule tool. Normal collection runs roughly 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the service day, so carts should be out before 7:00 a.m. Collection is suspended on six holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas), after which service runs one day late for the rest of that week. Property maintenance rules (§ 6-222) still govern how carts are stored between pickups. Questions about service days, missed pickups or extra carts go to Carmel Utilities or Republic Services.
Not participating where the city program is required; storing carts in violation of § 6-222; setting out unaccepted materials. Service issues (missed pickups, cart sizes, extra-cart fees) are handled administratively by Carmel Utilities and Republic Services rather than as code citations.
