Most unincorporated Salt Lake County residents receive waste and recycling service through the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District. Trash is typically collected weekly on a fixed day by neighborhood, with curbside recycling collected every other week. Carts must be placed at the curb by 7 AM on collection day and removed within 24 hours of pickup. Schedules shift by one day after major holidays.
The Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District, a special service district of which unincorporated Salt Lake County is a member, provides solid waste and recycling collection to most unincorporated neighborhoods. Each address is assigned a collection day between Monday and Friday, which residents can look up on the District website or app. Black refuse carts are collected weekly and blue recycling carts are collected every other week on the same day as trash. Residents may subscribe to an optional green waste cart for seasonal yard trimmings collection, typically April through November. Carts must be placed at the curb or alley by 7 AM on the scheduled collection day, with the wheels facing the house and at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides and overhead for truck automation. Carts must not block sidewalks, bike lanes, or vehicle travel lanes. After collection, carts must be removed from the public right-of-way within 24 hours and stored in a side yard, rear yard, or garage out of direct street view. Following observed holidays such as New Year Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Pioneer Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, collection shifts one day later for the remainder of that week. Missed pickups can be reported to the District within 24 hours and the District will return to service the cart. Extra bags beyond cart capacity are not collected under standard service but can be handled through special bulky pickups or drop-off at County transfer stations.
