Town of Babylon mandates source-separated recycling of paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and plastics 1 and 2 under Chapter 167. Single-use plastic bags are banned statewide under NY ECL 27-2801, and Suffolk County bans foam containers.
Babylon was a pioneer in recycling and requires residents to separate recyclables by material type. Paper and cardboard are collected on one week and commingled metal, glass, and plastic on the alternating week. Plastics accepted are generally 1 and 2 only. Contamination of recycling loads can cause non-collection. The NY State Bag Waste Reduction Act prohibits single-use plastic carryout bags, and Suffolk County Local Law 31-2019 prohibits polystyrene foam food service containers.
Putting recyclables in the garbage or mixing non-recyclables can result in non-collection and fines of 50-250 dollars. Retailers providing banned plastic bags face state fines up to 500 dollars per day.
