Westland provides single-stream curbside recycling for paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and plastics #1-#7. Participation is voluntary for residents, and contamination can trigger rejected loads.
The City of Westland operates a single-stream curbside recycling program collected weekly on the same day as refuse using a separate cart. Accepted materials include flattened cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic containers numbered 1 through 7 (rinsed, no caps required). Plastic bags, film wrap, food-soiled paper, foam, textiles, scrap metal, batteries, and electronics are excluded and contaminate loads, often causing the entire route to be diverted to landfill. While participation is encouraged through state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) grants, Westland does not currently impose fines on non-participating households. Multifamily complexes contract recycling separately with their own haulers.
