Full Breakdown

Village Code § 42-7 governs how residents prepare landscape waste (grass clippings, leaves, brush, branches and twigs) for pickup by the village's contract hauler. Under subsection (a)(1), anything other than tree branches, brush or twigs goes into a Kraft or similar biodegradable paper bag, closed by folding or tying with natural-fiber string, rope or twine; no wire, plastic or staples are allowed to close it, tree trimmings may protrude no more than 12 inches from the top, and the bag cannot exceed 50 pounds or 33 gallons.

Subsection (a)(2) covers branches, brush and twigs: they must be tied and bundled to no more than 50 pounds, four feet in length, two feet in diameter, with no limb thicker than three inches. 5 feet from a rear or side lot line, and is capped at 100 square feet, six feet in height, and 15 feet per side. Subsection (c) bars storing landscape waste outside a dwelling except at curbside for collection or, for homes without a garage, behind the residence out of view from the right-of-way.

Violations & Fines

Landscape waste violations fall under chapter 42's general enforcement scheme in § 42-10: fines of $30.00 to $500.00 per offense, with each day of a continuing violation counted separately and fines escalating for repeat offenses within 12 months. The code enforcement division investigates, issues citations, and may abate an uncorrected violation as a nuisance after notice to the owner or occupant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put loose leaves or branches at the curb in Bolingbrook?
No. Village Code § 42-7 requires landscape waste other than branches to go in a Kraft or similar biodegradable paper bag no larger than 33 gallons or 50 pounds, closed with natural-fiber string rather than wire, plastic or staples. Branches, brush and twigs must instead be tied into bundles no heavier than 50 pounds and no longer than four feet.
Can I compost yard waste at home instead of bagging it?
Yes, under § 42-7(b), but the pile cannot go in a required front yard or a drainage/utility easement, must sit at least 25 feet from a neighbor's dwelling and 2.5 feet from a side or rear lot line, and is capped at 100 square feet, six feet high and 15 feet per side. It also cannot include garbage, pet waste or meat scraps.
What size branches can I bundle for collection?
Section 42-7(a)(2) caps bundles at 50 pounds, four feet in length and two feet in diameter, and no single limb in the bundle can exceed three inches in diameter. Bundles must be tied with string, rope or twine into a manageable size for the village's contract hauler to collect.
