New Orleans, LA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 138-44 is short but decisive: yard waste, tree branches and shrubbery may not go in the city-issued roll cart at all, they're collected instead under the bulky-waste rules of § 138-43. Those rules split yard debris into two eligible categories for residential service locations. Tree limbs and branches qualify only if they're under four feet long and 12 inches in diameter, neatly bundled, with each bundle weighing 50 pounds or less; a regular collection allows up to six bundles, and a scheduled on-call pickup allows up to 15.

Leaves, weeds, grass clippings and hedge trimmings must be bagged, with each bag capped at 50 pounds, under the same six-bag regular / 15-bag on-call limits. Anything larger, branches over four feet or 12 inches thick, unbundled brush, oversized or overweight bundles and bags, or more than the bundle/bag caps, falls outside city collection and the resident has to arrange private disposal. Bulky and yard-waste pickup outside the French Quarter and Downtown Development District runs once a week on the second regular collection day, while inside those districts it's limited to Wednesdays; larger loads can be scheduled on-call by calling or emailing the city's service provider or 311. the day before pickup, clear of hydrants, poles and fences.
