Oyster Bay, NY Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Chapter 201 of the Oyster Bay Town Code defines yard waste as "grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches, stumps, roots, tree trimmings, hedge and shrub clippings, weeds, and other garden waste" under § 201-1, and the code folds it into the rubbish stream rather than running a separate yard-waste truck. Section 201-12(A) sets the prep rule that actually governs how residents must present it: all trees, stumps, trunks, branches, roots and other vegetation must be cut to widths and lengths not exceeding four feet and bundled for collection as rubbish, and excess dirt must be removed from tree stumps before they go to the curb.

Because yard waste is collected as rubbish, it also falls under the Article II rubbish limits in § 201-3: no more than 10 containers per property per collection day and a combined weight cap of 200 pounds for whatever is set out. Bundled brush and branches count toward that same 10-container, 200-pound ceiling unless the Commissioner of Sanitation authorizes a separate pickup. Collection happens on the regularly scheduled residential collection day set by Town Board resolution, during hours set by the Commissioner of Sanitation, per § 201-2(A).

Residents who generate more brush than the ordinary curb limit allows, from a storm cleanup or a major pruning job, need to arrange it through the Sanitation Department rather than stacking uncut branches at the curb, since oversized or unbundled loads violate the four-foot preparation standard.
