The Greensboro Tree Code and LDO require street trees in new development and govern planting in the public right-of-way with approved species, spacing, and clearance from utilities, sidewalks, and traffic-control devices.
Site plans submitted under the LDO must include a landscape plan with street trees in the planting strip between sidewalk and curb at standard spacing, typically thirty to forty feet on center based on mature canopy. Approved species lists exclude invasive species and avoid over-reliance on Bradford pears and other problem trees. Utility-line conflicts require small-stature species below overhead conductors. The City Arborist reviews species selection and inspects installation before final acceptance. Property owners may also volunteer through NeighborWoods to add canopy on existing residential streets at no out-of-pocket cost.
Failure to install required street trees per approved site plan can prevent issuance of a certificate of occupancy. Replacing dead street trees within a warranty period is the developer's obligation, with bond proceeds available if not performed.
