Las Vegas Urban Forestry approves tree species and locations for parkway planting strips between sidewalks and curbs, prioritizing low-water desert-adapted species suitable for the Mojave climate.
City Urban Forestry staff maintain an approved species list emphasizing low-water trees such as desert willow, palo verde, mesquite, southern live oak, and Chinese pistache. Adjacent property owners may plant in the parkway only with a permit specifying species, planting depth, irrigation method, and stake type. Drip irrigation is required, not turf flood. Trees must clear sight lines for drivers and provide pedestrian head clearance once mature. Public Works coordinates with NV Energy to prevent conflicts with overhead power lines, and tall species are restricted to lines without aerial wire.
Unauthorized parkway plantings can be removed at the homeowner's expense. Species not on the approved list, or planted without irrigation, are flagged during inspections and may not be replaced when they fail.
