Vineland, NJ Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

Vineland City Code § 682-6 restricts street tree planting to species on an official list maintained by the Vineland Environmental Commission; no other species may be planted as a street tree without written permission of the City Tree Committee. Trees are divided into three maturity classes: large trees reaching 40 feet or more, medium trees reaching 30 to 40 feet, and small trees reaching 20 to 30 feet. Section 682-7 sets minimum spacing by class: small trees no closer than 30 feet apart, medium trees 40 feet, and large trees 50 feet, except for special plantings the Tree Committee approves.

Section 682-8 sets the minimum distance from curbs and sidewalks: two feet for small trees, three feet for medium trees, and four feet for large trees. Section 682-9 bars planting any street tree within 20 feet of a street corner, measured from the nearest intersecting curblines, or within 10 feet of a fire hydrant. STREET TREES are defined in § 682-1 as trees, shrubs, bushes, and other woody vegetation on land between property lines on either side of any street, avenue, or way in the City.

The five-member City Tree Committee, a subcommittee of the Environmental Commission created under § 682-2, develops and updates an annual comprehensive tree plan under § 682-4 and administers planting, pruning, and removal citywide; adjacent property owners may plant their own street trees provided the selection and location comply with §§ 682-6 through 682-10. A permit from the Department of Licenses and Inspections, with a $25 annual fee and proof of liability insurance, is required under § 682-14 for anyone other than a public service company or City employee to prune, treat, or remove street or park trees.
