ADU rules in Redondo Beach, CA — also called accessory dwelling unit regulations or granny flat ordinances — cover setbacks, owner-occupancy, parking, and permit requirements.
Redondo Beach permits accessory dwelling units ministerially under RBMC Section 10-2.1506, implementing California state ADU law (Gov. Code 65852.2). Single-family lots may add one ADU plus one junior ADU; detached new ADUs are capped at 800 square feet.
ADUs are governed by RBMC 10-2.1506 (Ordinance 3210-20, adopted Jan. 12, 2021, amended by Ordinance 3264-23 on Nov. 7, 2023). A single-family lot may add one ADU and one junior ADU (JADU, no larger than 500 sq ft, contained within the dwelling). Detached new-construction ADUs may not exceed 800 sq ft. Detached ADUs must sit at least four feet from side and rear lot lines. Height is generally 16 feet, with 18 feet permitted near transit. Multi-family lots may add detached ADUs plus interior conversions. One off-street space per ADU is required along and west of Catalina Avenue, but parking is waived within a half-mile of transit. ADUs may not be rented for fewer than 30 days.
Building an unpermitted ADU or one exceeding state and local size, height, or setback standards is a zoning violation enforced by Community Development; the city can require correction, removal, or impose code-enforcement penalties.
