Shed permit rules in Redondo Beach, CA โ also referred to as storage shed, backyard shed, or accessory building regulations โ set size limits, setbacks, and when a building permit is required.
Redondo Beach regulates sheds as accessory structures in residential zones under its zoning ordinance. Accessory buildings must be detached, limited to one story, and kept a minimum distance from the main dwelling and other accessory buildings.
Under the city's residential zone standards (RBMC Chapter 10-2), an accessory building must be detached from the dwelling and from other accessory buildings, with a minimum five-foot separation between the walls or columns supporting the buildings. An unenclosed accessory structure does not require the five-foot separation. No accessory building may exceed one story in height. Small metal tool sheds used only as accessory buildings and not exceeding 120 square feet of projected roof area are allowed. A corner lot has a minimum five-foot exterior side setback for an accessory structure located in the required rear setback. Building permits are required through Community Development and Building & Safety, and structures must meet rear-yard placement standards.
Placing a shed in a required setback, exceeding one story, or omitting required permits is a code violation; Code Enforcement may require relocation, removal, or permit correction.
