Baytown regulates storage sheds as accessory structures under the city's zoning and building codes. Sheds that are 120 square feet or smaller in floor area and do not have electrical or plumbing connections are generally exempt from a building permit requirement under the International Residential Code exemption for small accessory structures. However, all sheds regardless of size must comply with the zoning ordinance setback requirements for the applicable district. Sheds must be located in the rear yard, not the front or side yard. Minimum setbacks are typically 5 feet from side and rear property lines. The total area of all accessory structures combined should not exceed lot coverage maximums for the zoning district. Sheds must not exceed the height of the principal dwelling and generally should not exceed a single story. Pre-fabricated sheds placed on grade without a permanent foundation are treated the same as site-built sheds for zoning purposes. Metal, wood, and vinyl siding materials are all permitted, though the shed should be maintained in good condition. Sheds must not be used for habitable living space, commercial storage, or business operations that would violate the home occupation provisions. If the shed includes electrical wiring, a separate electrical permit is required. Sheds in flood zones may be subject to additional elevation or anchoring requirements per the city's floodplain management ordinance.
