Ogden, UT Accessory Structures: Shed & Carport Rules (2026)

Ogden City Code § 15-13-33 governs every accessory building placed in a Residential Zone within Ogden City, from garden sheds to detached garages. Each residential lot may hold up to three accessory buildings with combined floor area capped at the zone's maximum lot coverage; attached or detached garages and carports, and buildings open on three sides such as gazebos, pergolas, cabanas and arbors, do not count toward that three-building limit. Design must match a genuine accessory use: converted shipping or cargo containers are barred unless fully enclosed inside a compliant building.

Exterior finish rules tighten with size. Buildings over 400 square feet are limited to brick, stone, synthetic stone, lap or tongue-and-groove siding, vinyl, glass, stucco, or architectural metal meeting eight separate conditions, including a matching or neutral color, baked-on or powder-coated finish, a 4:12 minimum roof pitch with a six-inch eave, and windows on at least two sides. On a half-acre lot or smaller, an accessory building's footprint may not exceed the lesser of 80% of the main house's footprint or the zone's maximum lot coverage; on larger lots the cap is the house's own footprint unless a conditional use permit is obtained, and any building exceeding 80% of the house footprint must meet the same rear and side setback required for the main building.

Metal accessory buildings must sit in the rear yard only. No detached building except a trellis may stand between the house and the street, and buildings over 200 square feet need a pitched roof with a six-inch eave unless the Planning Commission grants an exception. Height is capped at the limit set for main buildings under § 15-13-5.
