Costa Mesa has updated its beekeeping regulations to allow residential beekeeping with a permit. A residential beekeeping permit is required for all domesticated hives. Beehives must be placed at least 15 feet from any property line and 25 feet from neighboring residential buildings unless specific mitigation measures are met. Hive management must prevent swarms, excessive bee activity, and nuisance conditions for neighbors. The number of hives may be limited based on lot size and proximity to neighbors. Water sources for bees must be provided on-site to prevent bees from visiting neighboring properties for water. Contact Costa Mesa Animal Control at (714) 754-5311 or the Planning Division for permit requirements and current regulations.
Operating beehives without a permit is a code violation. Beekeeping creating nuisance conditions may result in permit revocation and orders to remove hives.
