Colorado Springs lets residents keep up to ten rabbits or chickens six months or older with at least four square feet of shelter per animal, but roosters are prohibited and on-lot slaughter is banned; up to four hoofed pets are allowed under City Code 6.9.101.
Backyard poultry and livestock are governed by City Code provisions summarized on the City's official 'City Regulations for Animals' page. Residents may keep up to ten (10) rabbits or chickens aged six months or older; shelters or coops must provide at least four (4) square feet for each rabbit or chicken and comply with City Code Subsection 7.3.105.A. Roosters are explicitly prohibited, and slaughtering animals is banned on residential lots. Larger livestock is regulated under City Code Subsection 6.9.101: up to four (4) hoofed pets (such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, or mules) may be kept on a property, and when three or more are kept the housing structure must be located in the rear fifty percent (50%) of the lot, at least twenty (20) feet from any abutting property line, with at least one hundred thirty (130) square feet of permeable area per animal; residential slaughter of hoofed animals is also prohibited. Private stables are permitted in residential zones only on lots of 37,000 square feet or more, with structures at least 55 feet from adjacent buildings under City Code Subsection 7.3.105.L.
Keeping a rooster, exceeding the ten-bird or four-hoofed-animal limits, slaughtering animals on a residential lot, or failing to meet coop space and setback standards is a code violation. Enforcement is through the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (Animal Law Enforcement) and the City's neighborhood/code enforcement, with citations and the City payable-fine schedule.
