Davis Municipal Code Section 5.01.020 lets residents keep up to six chicken hens (or six pigeons or six rabbits, combined not to exceed six). No structure may sit within forty feet of a neighboring residence. Larger livestock is generally prohibited.
Davis Municipal Code Article 5.01 controls the keeping of animals and fowl. Section 5.01.010 prohibits keeping livestock and domestic fowl generally except as specifically allowed. Section 5.01.020 is the small-animal exception: not more than six chicken hens, or six pigeons, or a combination not exceeding six, or not more than six rabbits, may be kept in a clean, sanitary pen. No part of that pen may sit less than forty feet from any residence other than the keeper's own, and it must not create a nuisance. The section addresses hens, not roosters, which fall under the general fowl prohibition and nuisance-noise rules. Cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and swine are barred except by special permit under Sections 5.01.030 and 5.01.040.
Exceeding six hens, keeping roosters or prohibited livestock, or siting a coop within forty feet of a neighbor's home violates DMC 5.01.020 as a nuisance. The city may order removal, and Yolo County Animal Services may cite the keeper.
