Edinburg, TX Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

City Code Sec. 91.04.01 bans raising, keeping, penning, staking, or grazing livestock or domestic fowl (which the code defines to include chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, pigeons, and guineas) within 300 feet of any residential building, hotel, church, school, store, or other frequented building or human habitation. Commercial hatcheries are exempt. Sec. 91.04 additionally requires that any livestock or fowl actually permitted under the chapter be kept in a suitable pen that doesn't become unsanitary, breed flies, or injure the health of nearby residents, and must comply with V.T.C.A., Agriculture Code title 6, ch. 142. The 300-foot buffer effectively rules out keeping backyard chickens on a typical single-family residential lot inside city limits. The code does not single out roosters for a separate ban.
