La Grange, MO Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 210.225, added by Ordinance No. 665 on November 27, 2023, allows chickens and fowl in the City of La Grange only within specific limits. A lot must measure at least 66 feet by 120 feet to keep up to 12 chickens or fowl (not counting chicks), and an owner with two or more adjoining lots actively used for the birds' care may keep up to 24. Only one rooster may be owned or possessed, and commercial chicken or fowl breeding or fertilizer production is prohibited outright.

Every bird must be kept in an enclosure or fenced area maintained in a clean, neat, odor-free and sanitary condition at all times, and must be secured inside a roofed henhouse or housing enclosure, also kept clean and dry, during non-daylight hours. Henhouses and other housing enclosures must sit to the rear of the dwelling or main structure and at least 10 feet from the property line. Owners must give chickens and fowl constant access to feed and clean water, and must take all necessary steps to prevent and reduce predators, rodents, insects and parasites; an infestation causing unhealthy conditions for human habitation is grounds for the City to order the animals removed.

The Section defines 'chicken' and 'fowl' broadly to include any domesticated bird kept for eggs or flesh, such as chickens, roosters, turkeys, ducks and geese. A violation is punishable under the general fine schedule in Section 100.220, and the Section separately authorizes an order for removal of the animals regardless of any fine imposed.
