La Grange, MO Animal Ordinances: Dog Leash Laws (2026)

Section 210.040, part of Chapter 210 adopted by Ordinance No. 389 on January 12, 1998, provides that no dog shall be allowed by its owner to run at-large anywhere in the City of La Grange, and directs Police Officers to take up and impound any dog found at-large. Section 210.060 backs this up: the Chief of Police or a Police Officer issues a summons to the registered keeper of any dog found running at-large, and any dog running at-large without the metal rabies tag required by Section 210.020 is taken up and impounded outright.

Before release, Section 210.070 requires the owner to pay the City Clerk an impounding fee of $25.00 plus $10.00 per day of boarding, or $200.00 plus $10.00 per day if the dog is a registered 'vicious dog.' Owners must also register every dog with the City Clerk and keep it current-vaccinated against rabies each calendar year under Sections 210.020 and 210.030, with the rabies tag number serving as the registration number. When a dog is impounded, Section 210.050 requires the Humane Officer or Police Department to post a notice at City Hall, the Police Department, Public Works, the Post Office and Casey's General Store within 24 hours, and to publish notice once in the Canton Press-News Journal; an unclaimed, non-vicious dog may be sold seven days after publication, while a vicious dog not claimed is disposed of.

Dog owners must also clean up after their dogs on public or others' private property under Section 210.025, with immediate removal recognized as a specific defense.
