Little Elm, TX Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Little Elm regulates chickens and livestock through Chapter 18 Animals and Chapter 106 Zoning use regulations. Keeping chickens and other poultry may be permitted in certain zoning districts, particularly on larger lots zoned for agricultural or estate residential use. Standard residential subdivisions with smaller lot sizes may restrict or prohibit livestock and poultry keeping. Roosters are commonly prohibited or restricted in residential areas due to noise. Texas HB 1750 signed in 2023 provides state-level protection for keeping backyard chickens as an agricultural use on properties meeting certain criteria, though municipal zoning can still impose reasonable regulations on lot size, setbacks, and coop placement. HOAs in most of Little Elms newer subdivisions prohibit livestock and poultry through deed restrictions regardless of municipal zoning.
