New Britain, CT Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Sec. 6-3 is a single flat prohibition: "No person shall keep swine or make or maintain any pigpen," with no exceptions written into the section. It sits inside Chapter 6's general nuisance framework set by Sec. 6-2(a), which bars keeping any animal in any place or manner detrimental to human or animal health, hazardous to the animal, or that creates a nuisance, and Sec. 6-2(b), which bars housing any animal on a vacant or abandoned structure, common hallway, or common area. Sec. 6-1 assigns enforcement of the entire animal chapter, including these provisions, to the Director of Health or his agent and/or the New Britain Police Department, who may refer complaints to one another.

Chapter 6 covers dogs, cats, pigeons and honeybees in dedicated articles, but contains no article establishing a permit or standard specifically for keeping chickens or other poultry, so any backyard flock is governed only by the Sec. 6-2 nuisance and health standard rather than a numeric limit or coop-setback rule.
