Pageland, SC Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Article IV of the animal chapter treats farm animals and household poultry very differently. Section 4-97 flatly bans owning, keeping, harboring, or maintaining any swine, goat, sheep, horse, mule, ass, jennet, cattle, goose, duck, other fowl, or rabbit inside the corporate limits, and separately bans letting any such animal or fowl run at large; the town council can waive the ban only for a parade, circus, or exhibition. Chickens get a narrower exception under Section 4-98: raising or keeping chickens is unlawful unless the keeper pays an annual permit fee set by the town, keeps no more than six chickens total, keeps zero roosters, houses the birds in a pen or coop the code enforcement officer finds satisfactory, and sites that coop at least 50 feet from any neighboring dwelling.

The keeper must also get written permission from every neighbor whose property line sits within 50 feet of the coop before starting. The ordinance backs the permit with a complaint mechanism: two verified complaints about the care of the chickens cost the keeper the right to raise them, and the town will then take legal steps to remove the birds from the property. Because Section 4-98 was adopted by Ordinance No. 332 in 2012 as a stand-alone carve-out from the Section 4-97 livestock ban, it does not extend to any other fowl or livestock; ducks, geese, and other farm animals remain fully prohibited town-wide.
