Johns Creek prohibits dogs from running at large. Off the owner's premises, a dog must be on a leash no more than six feet long under the control of a competent person. On the premises, dogs must be confined by a fence, wall, enclosure, leash, or chain. Cats are exempt.
Under Johns Creek Code Sec. 10-6 (Running at large), it is unlawful for the owner, custodian, or harborer of any dog to let it leave their premises unless the dog is securely under leash, with the leash being no more than six feet long and under the control of a competent person. While on the property, dogs must be restrained by a fence, wall, or other enclosure, or restrained individually by a leash or chain. The ordinance allows electronic (invisible-fence) confinement systems as an acceptable enclosure when the equipment is properly maintained, in continuous working order, and the animal wears the appropriate electronic collar within the perimeter; however, an electronic system may not be used for a trained guard dog, and anyone found in violation while using one must thereafter switch to a fence, wall, leash, or chain. Exceptions exist for dogs participating in or training for obedience trials, field trials, dog shows, tracking work, or law enforcement, and for hunting dogs in agriculturally zoned areas where the handler carries a valid hunting license and proof of vaccination. The running-at-large prohibition expressly does not apply to cats. This is the City of Johns Creek's own ordinance, not a Fulton County rule.
Violation of Chapter 10 is punishable under Sec. 1-7 by a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, with each day a separate offense. Animals running at large may be impounded under Sec. 10-49.
