Grapevine prohibits dangerous wild animals (big cats, bears, primates, venomous reptiles) under TX Health and Safety Code 822. Many other exotic species require TPWD permits. Common small exotics are allowed.
Grapevine follows Texas Health and Safety Code 822 Subchapter E which prohibits the private ownership of dangerous wild animals including lions, tigers, cougars, bears, wolves, jackals, chimpanzees, orangutans, baboons, and other great apes. Venomous reptiles and constrictors over 6 feet require special registration and enclosure certification. The city does not maintain a separate banned-species list but enforces the state framework through Animal Services. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) issues additional permits for native wildlife including raptors (falconry permit), alligators (exhibit permit), fur-bearing animals, and exotic ungulates. Common small exotic pets including ball pythons, bearded dragons, hedgehogs (not banned in Texas), sugar gliders, ferrets, parrots, and aquarium fish are allowed without permit. HOA covenants and landlord rules may impose additional restrictions. Violations of the state ban are Class C misdemeanors with fines up to 500 dollars, and prohibited animals are confiscated by Animal Services. The city can require proof of permits and insurance for registered exotic species.
Class C misdemeanor; up to 500 dollars. Prohibited animals confiscated. State felony charges possible for dangerous wild animals.
