Exotic pets in Sanger are governed by California Fish and Game Code Section 2118 and 14 CCR 671. Ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and primates are all prohibited statewide.
California maintains one of the strictest exotic animal frameworks in the nation. Fish and Game Code Section 2118 makes it unlawful to import, transport, or possess any live wild animal restricted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Title 14 CCR Sections 671-671.1 list species that are restricted or require permits. Prohibited animals in California include ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, gerbils, monkeys, and most wild cats. Sanger follows these state prohibitions without additional local exemptions. Some non-traditional pets are allowed, including certain reptiles (non-venomous snakes, many lizard species), pot-bellied pigs (with size limits), and domesticated rabbits. Pot-bellied pigs in residential zones may be subject to Sanger livestock provisions under Title 6. Any person wishing to keep a restricted species must obtain a Restricted Species Permit from CDFW, which is generally only issued for educational, scientific, or exhibitor purposes rather than personal pet ownership.
Possession of restricted species: misdemeanor under F&G Code 2118. Fine up to $1,000 and/or six months imprisonment. Animal may be confiscated. CDFW permit violations carry additional administrative penalties.
