Springfield, OR Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Springfield allows miniature Vietnamese, Chinese or Oriental pot-bellied pigs as pets under Section 5.416(2), subject to a size cap (spayed or neutered, no taller than 18 inches at the shoulder and no heavier than 95 pounds), a one-pig-per-address limit, and a veterinarian's spay or neuter certificate. A keeper who meets those conditions must then license the pig under Section 5.426(6), the same fee schedule used for a dog license under Section 5.426(3). Subsection 5.426(6)(d) adds the microchip requirement on top of the license tag: 'A license tag issued to a pig keeper shall be attached securely to a collar or harness of the pig for which it was issued.

In addition to a collar or license, a microchip identification shall be utilized.' Failure to comply with the pig-keeping conditions in Section 5.416 or the licensing conditions in Section 5.426, including the microchip requirement, is a violation punishable under Section 1.205 with a fine of up to $720.00. Dogs, by contrast, are licensed under Section 5.426(1) with only a collar tag and rabies certificate, and cats carry no license or identification requirement at all under Sections 5.400 to 5.476. Springfield's animal control authority administers pig and dog licenses and can revoke a commercial kennel license after three chapter violations within 12 months under Section 5.426(2)(d).
