Greece, NY Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Section 157-10 of the Property Maintenance Code, titled "Animals," sets the town's per-dwelling dog cap in Subsection A: not more than three dogs shall be permitted per dwelling unit. The section carves out one exception for breeding: the offspring of any resident female dog are not counted toward the three-dog limit, provided that offspring are less than four months old, so a litter does not automatically put a household over the cap while the puppies are newborns. Once a puppy reaches four months, it counts as one of the three permitted dogs.

The same section handles other animals differently. Subsection B allows farm animals to be kept outdoors regardless of size, breed or species, but only if they are kept on a farm as defined elsewhere in the Zoning Code. Subsection C sends horses and stables to Chapter 211, Zoning, for their own separate standards. Subsection D covers everything else: any animal not specifically addressed in § 157-10 may be kept as a pet only if it is kept indoors, except domestic cats, which are exempt from the indoor requirement and may be kept outdoors.

Because § 157-10 cross-references Chapter 211, Zoning, throughout, the Zoning Code supplies the underlying district-level detail while this Property Maintenance Code section states the operative numeric limit. A household exceeding three dogs is enforced the same way as any other Chapter 157 violation: Building Inspector notice under § 157-18, followed by the § 157-20B penalty of up to $1,000 or 15 days' imprisonment, or both, for a violation left uncorrected, with each day treated separately.
