Section 157-8C(4) of the Property Maintenance Code permits a resident to park recreational vehicles they own on their premises, provided the vehicles are in condition for their intended use and licensed according to New York State regulations; an unlicensed or non-functioning RV or boat does not qualify for the exemption. Subsection (5) defines "recreational vehicle" broadly: a device used as, mounted on, or pulled by a motor vehicle for recreational purposes, expressly including travel trailers, tent trailers, pickup campers, motor homes, boats, boat trailers, snow vehicles, racing vehicles, cycle trailers, utility trailers, or similar vehicles or equipment.

Even a qualifying RV or boat must still comply with the general outdoor storage rules in § 157-8C(1): it cannot sit in a tree lawn area except during the winter parking period set by Chapter 146, § 146-8, cannot block a pedestrian walk, fire lane, driveway or required parking space, cannot interfere with the safe use of neighboring property or a public right-of-way, and cannot impede a required building exit. The section also cross-references Chapter 211, Zoning, for the underlying district standards that apply to recreational-vehicle storage.

A property found in violation receives written notice from the Building Inspector under § 157-18 with a compliance deadline of at least five days, and continued noncompliance is punishable under § 157-20B by a fine of up to $1,000, up to 15 days imprisonment, or both, with each day counted as a separate offense.
