Lenexa, KS Animal Ordinances: Veterinary Clinic Zoning (2026)

Lenexa City Code § 4-1-B-23-O governs veterinary hospitals, which the Code defines as establishments maintained and operated by a licensed veterinarian for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury of animals. In the NP-O, CP-O, CP-1, CP-2, CC and PMU zoning districts, treatment is limited to small domestic animals such as dogs and cats. The use is permitted in the AG Agricultural District and the CP-4 District, and no zoning permit is issued for any use that fails the supplementary use regulations.

Outdoor runs are barred as an accessory use in every district except AG. Where they are allowed, they cannot sit in the front yard, must be at least 50 feet from any property line (or the larger setback the district requires), must be hard surfaced or grassed with drains connected to an approved sanitary facility, and are allowed only on lots of at least 3 acres, or the larger minimum the district requires. The Planning Commission can approve an increase of the land use buffer factor for designated outdoor run areas. The AG district itself sets a 20-acre minimum lot size.

One on-site dwelling unit can be allowed with a special use permit, but only in conjunction with a veterinary hospital providing overnight medical care for animals. It must meet all applicable codes, sit within the principal structure, and operate as an accessory use to the hospital. Only the owner or an employee of the hospital can live there, and it can be rented only to an employee. No dwelling unit is allowed when the hospital is in a multi-tenant building or when the business owner is not the property owner.
