Rothschild, WI Building Safety: Building Permits (2026)

Chapter 234's Article I adopts the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code, incorporating Wis. Adm. Code Chs. SPS 320 through 325, and directs a Building Inspector certified by the state Department of Safety and Professional Services to administer and enforce it. Section 234-2 requires a state uniform building permit before building any one- or two-family dwelling; the Village issues the permit, a copy goes to the Village Clerk, and the permit automatically expires if the project is not finished within two years of issuance. Section 234-3 leaves the fee itself to the Village Board rather than fixing a dollar figure in the code.

Article II applies a parallel scheme to everything else: § 234-6 subjects new commercial buildings, alterations, additions, repairs and maintenance other than one- and two-family dwellings to the Wisconsin Commercial Building Code, Wis. Adm. Code Chs. SPS 361 through 366, while § 234-10 requires its own uniform building permit, filed the same way, for building, altering, repairing or maintaining a structure, or for storing flammable liquid or gas, with the same two-year automatic revocation. Section 234-7 layers additional state code requirements onto storage of flammable and combustible liquids, LP and natural gas, and anhydrous ammonia, and § 234-8 requires drain tile on all below-grade construction unless the soil is sandy gravel with groundwater and bedrock more than seven feet down.
