Ashwaubenon, WI Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Ashwaubenon Municipal Code Sec. 5-2-396 adopts the National Electrical Code, the state Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations Code (Wis. Admin. Code ch. SPS 305), the state Electrical Code (Wis. Admin. Code ch. SPS 316) and the state Electrical Standards Code (Wis. Admin. Code ch. DSPS 324) by reference into Article 2 of Chapter 5, so the base technical standard is the state code, not a Village-written one; failing to comply with any adopted code is itself a violation of this article. On top of that state-adopted baseline, the Village layers its own permitting mechanics.

Sec. 5-2-493 requires every permit application to state the work address, the owner's name, the contractor's name, the fee amount under the Village fee schedule, a general description of the work, and the signature of a person authorized under the chapter. Sec. 5-2-460 requires that only a state-certified electrician or a current master electrician's license holder may sign and apply for an electrical permit, and a contractor (or at least one full-time employee) must hold that state certification. Sec. 5-2-512 requires all new single-family residential electrical work to be done by a Village-licensed electrical contractor.

Sec. 5-2-513 carves out a homeowner exception: an owner may wire their own one-family dwelling if the electrical inspector finds the homeowner reasonably knowledgeable, the homeowner discusses procedures and plans with the inspector in advance, the work is on a one-family dwelling, and the owner occupies it while the work is done; alterations to service entrance equipment still require a Village-licensed contractor. Sec. 5-2-494 requires rough, service and final inspections with 48 hours' notice, and work cannot proceed until each required inspection is approved.
