Boone County, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Boone County Code § 151.23(A)(2) adopts the Indiana Electrical Rules, 1981 Edition (660 I.A.C. 7), which identify, amend and incorporate the National Electrical Code, 1981 Edition, as the governing standard for electrical construction and alteration in the county alongside the building, plumbing, mechanical, energy and swimming pool rules adopted in the same section. The Boone County Area Plan Commission, under its Executive Director and Building Inspector, administers and enforces this adopted code under § 151.21, and electrical work tied to construction, alteration or repair of a building or structure generally needs a permit under the same permitting process set out for building work in § 151.24.

Section 151.35 exempts certain structures, farm buildings for confining animals or storing farm equipment, small fences and mini-storage barns under 80 square feet, from needing a building permit, but § 151.35(D) makes clear those exemptions do not carry over automatically to electrical work: 'Electrical permits may be required for all such exempt structures, however.' Copies of the adopted Indiana Electrical Rules and National Electrical Code are kept on file for public inspection at the Boone County Area Plan Commission office under § 151.23(B).
