Hamilton, NJ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 167-2A(20) prices electrical work item by item rather than as a flat construction-permit fee. Every job carries a $50 minimum for all use groups, plus a $50-per-hour update plan review charge, minimum one hour, if plans change mid-review. Receptacles, fixtures and devices, defined to include lighting fixtures, wall switches, convenience receptacles, sensors, dimmers, alarm devices, smoke and heat detectors, communications outlets, light standards eight feet or under, emergency lights, electric signs and exit lights rated 20 amperes or less, are billed $75 for the first block of one to 25 and $35 for each additional block of up to 25.

Existing one-, two- and three-family dwellings (Use Groups R-3, R-4 and R-5) get a lower rate: $50 for the first block of 25 and $15 for each additional block. Residential electrical services are billed by amperage: $100 for 30 to 200 amperes and $175 for 201 to 400 amperes. Commercial services scale further, from $100 at 0 to 200 amperes up to $575 above 400 amperes. Motors and other electrical devices are billed separately, from $35 for units rated one to 10 horsepower or kilowatts up to $65 for units between 10 and 50 kilowatts, and residential HVAC work runs $75 new or $50 to replace.

The electrical subcode official who reviews and issues these permits is one of the officials the Township is required to appoint under § 167-1A, alongside the Construction Official, building, plumbing and fire protection subcode officials.
