Haverhill, MA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

City Code § 141-1 adopts the National Electric Code of the National Board of Fire Underwriters, as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association, for all electrical wiring and apparatus in the City, and puts the Inspector of Wires and his deputies in charge of enforcing it. Section 141-18 requires written notice to, and a written permit from, the Inspector of Wires before anyone commences new electrical work or substantially alters or extends existing work in any building or premises, public or private. Section 141-19 sends the fee schedule to Chapter 120, Building Construction, where § 120-11.B lists per-job electrical fees: a minimum electrical permit is $20, a 100-amp service change including one meter is $40, a 200-amp service change including one meter is $60, additional meters are $15 each, and appliance work for remodels or alterations runs $20 each.

Section 141-20 lets the Inspector of Wires refuse approval of work that does not conform to the National Electrical Code and lets him impose further reasonable safety requirements. Section 141-23 requires a final inspection and a certificate of satisfactory inspection before current can be turned on, and § 141-21 gives the Inspector a right of entry to buildings under construction to confirm compliance as work progresses.
