Lee's Summit, MO Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Sec. 7-300 adopts the 2017 edition of the National Electrical Code, NFPA No. 70-2017, as the electrical code for Lee's Summit, incorporated as though printed in full except where the City specifically amends it. Because Sec. 7-127 requires a permit for any work the Code regulates, including electrical installations, alterations, or replacements, that NEC adoption is what an electrical permit application is measured against. Article III of Chapter 7 amends three NEC sections locally: Sec. 7-301 requires GFCI protection on all 125-volt, 15- and 20-amp receptacles in unfinished basement areas not intended as habitable rooms, with exceptions for hard-to-reach receptacles like a garage-door-opener outlet and dedicated single receptacles for appliances such as a refrigerator or sump pump; Sec.

7-302 caps countertop receptacle height at 20 inches above the work surface, or 12 inches for ADA-accessible or island counters; and Sec. 7-303 requires the service disconnect at a readily accessible point either outside the building or just inside where service conductors enter, with a separate disconnect required at the service entrance if the conductors run more than ten feet to the panel. Sec. 7-128(B) exempts minor electrical repairs and lamp replacement, radio and TV transmission equipment except its power wiring, and temporary testing systems from the permit requirement, but everything else covered by the NEC needs a Sec. 7-127 permit before work starts.
