Livonia, MI Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 15.04.060(D) adopts, as Livonia's electrical code, the Electrical Code contained in Section 8a of the State Construction Code, 1972 PA 230 (MCL 125.1501 et seq.), as amended by 1999 PA 245, along with any future amendments the state enacts. That adoption is made part of Chapter 15.04 with the same effect as if repeated word for word, and the Inspection Department's Building Official administers it. Section 15.56.040 sets out the fee schedule that applies once a permit is required. Subsection A sets a flat floor: in no case can less than $40.00 be charged for any one electrical permit, with maintenance, special, annual, and sign permits computed separately rather than combined with other work.

Subsection B charges $11.00 for each of the first sixty circuits, new or extended, and $3.00 for each additional circuit beyond sixty. Subsection C charges $11.00 for each twenty-five lamps or tubes or fraction of that count. Subsection H prices new electrical services on a sliding scale by amperage, from $20.00 for 100 amps or less up to $100.00 for anything over 800 amps, with temporary secondary service at $40.00 and temporary primary service at $80.00. Residential air conditioning and 220/240-volt appliance circuits carry their own lower rates under Subsections E and G and are not subject to the $40.00 minimum. Fees under this chapter are deposited into the city's general fund under Section 15.56.090 to help offset the cost of regulation and inspection.
