Macon-Bibb County, GA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Macon-Bibb County Code of Ordinances § 6-1 creates the position of Chief Building Official within the Department of Business Development Services and charges that official with enforcing the building and technical codes adopted by the chapter, including the state minimum standard codes. § 8-2-20 and administered through Ga. Comp. & Regs. 110-11-1, include the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as the mandatory electrical standard; the Georgia Department of Community Affairs currently enforces the 2023 NEC edition with state amendments. Because Macon-Bibb adopts DCA's codes automatically as they are amended, electricians and contractors must pull permits and pass inspection under whatever NEC edition DCA has in force at the time of the work, not a version frozen into county ordinance text.

Section 6-1(c) also directs the department to follow the 2014 "Administrative Procedures for the Enforcement of the Georgia State Minimum Standard Codes" for permit processing and inspection scheduling, and § 6-1(e) lets the building official resolve conflicts between adopted technical codes based on public health and safety. Before any electrical permit, building permit, plat approval, inspection report, or certificate of occupancy is issued or renewed, § 6-5 requires the applicant to hold a certificate of good standing under Chapter 26, Article II, Division 1 of the county code.
