New Britain, CT Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 7-2 makes clear that paying the building permit fee for new construction, additions, alteration, removal or demolition does not excuse an applicant or permit holder from also paying separate fees prescribed by law or ordinance for zoning permits and certificates, water taps, sewer connections, and electrical, plumbing, mechanical and sprinkler system permits, or from paying for related inspections, whether the work falls inside or outside the jurisdiction of the department of licenses, permits and inspections. Section 7-13 then backs that requirement with a penalty: anyone who commences work needing a permit before applying for or receiving it owes a fine in addition to the permit fee, set at fifty dollars for an electrical, plumbing, heating or sprinkler permit, one hundred dollars for a commercial or residential building permit, and two hundred dollars for a demolition permit.

Section 2-784 places administration of electrical work inside the building code enforcement division of the department of licenses, permits and inspections, which accepts applications, reviews plans, issues permits and conducts the related inspections for all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installations tied to a construction project. Section 2-780 separately adopts the Connecticut State Building Code, as amended by the state building inspector and codes and standards committee, as the code the city enforces for that electrical work.
