Plymouth, MN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

City Code § 1015.21 states plainly that it is unlawful for any person to perform work subject to the Building Code, which under § 400.01 incorporates the Minnesota State Building Code, without first obtaining an electrical permit from the City. Section 1015.01 backs that up as a general rule for every permit the Code requires. The fee schedule in § 1015.21 splits residential, multi-family and non-residential work. For one- and two-family dwellings, complete wiring on new construction costs $150 per unit, upgraded electrical services or sub-panels cost $50, wiring for additions, remodeling or rewiring costs $45 for the first room plus $7 for each additional room, and minor work such as furnace wiring, saver switches, garage circuits or air conditioning wiring costs a flat $45.

Multi-family new construction runs $55 per unit for the first 12 units and $30 per unit after that, while additions, remodeling and rewiring on multi-family and non-residential jobs are billed at 2.5% of job value, with a $40 minimum, up to $50,000, then $1,250 for the first $50,000 plus 0.0075% of the remaining balance. Separate flat fees apply to temporary construction service, $45 for 0-100 amps and $60 above that, swimming pools and hot tubs at $50 each, 120-volt alarm systems at $45, and sign wiring at $40 per sign. Anyone who begins electrical work before permitting pays double the fee under § 1015.07, Subd. 2, and a Building Code violation is a misdemeanor under § 400.07.
