Full Breakdown

Under Perris Municipal Code Chapter 16.12, the building official examines any building or structure to determine whether it is a "dangerous building" or a "substandard residential building" as defined by state Health and Safety Code § 17920.3. Once triggered, the official must prepare detailed written findings and a report on the building's condition, kept on file in the building division for the owner to review, and recommending repair, vacation, or demolition. That report is what starts the formal nuisance-abatement notice and hearing process before the Board of Zoning Adjustment.

Violations & Fines

No penalty attaches to the inspection itself, but failure to comply with a later repair, vacate, or demolish order is unlawful under § 16.12.220, and occupying a building posted "unsafe to occupy" is a misdemeanor under § 16.12.080(d).

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after an inspection finds a building unsafe?
The official issues written findings and a report recommending repair or demolition, which starts the nuisance-abatement notice and hearing process under Chapter 16.12.
