Sunnyvale, CA Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

Section 16.16.030 amends the 2025 California Building Code's administrative chapter for Sunnyvale, and its inspection provisions give the building official three distinct tools. Section 110.3.10, Other Inspections, lets the building official make or require inspections beyond those specifically listed elsewhere in the code whenever needed to confirm compliance with the building code or any other law enforced by code enforcement. Section 110.7, Inspection Record Card, bars the start of any permitted work until the permit holder or an agent has posted, or otherwise made available, the inspection record card issued by the building official; the card must stay accessible on the job site so the building official can log each required entry, and it must remain available until final approval is granted.

Section 110.8, Reinspections, authorizes a reinspection fee whenever a portion of work called for inspection is not complete, or when corrections previously ordered were not made. The section is explicit that it does not authorize a fee the first time a job is rejected for noncompliance; instead it targets the practice of calling for inspection before work is actually ready. Reinspection fees may also be assessed when the inspection record card is missing from the site, when approved plans are not available to the inspector, when the inspector is denied access on the scheduled date, or when the work deviates from plans without the building official's approval. Once a reinspection fee is assessed, the code bars any further inspection of that work until the fee is paid, and the amount follows the city's current fee resolution.
