All home occupations shall conform to the following standards:

The use may increase vehicular traffic flow and parking by no more than one vehicle at a time;(7)Only those articles produced by the home occupation may be sold on the premises;(8)The operation of any wholesale or retail business is prohibited unless it is conducted entirely by mail, and does not involve the sale, shipment or delivery of merchandise on the premises;(9)Any manufacturing business or activity which produces noxious matter or perceptible noise beyond the lot line is prohibited;

Full Breakdown

Neenah Municipal Code § 26-491 sets the standards every home occupation must meet, and two of them close the door on residential auto repair shops: subsection (5) prohibits the use of mechanical equipment other than what is usual for purely domestic or hobby purposes, and subsection (9) bars any manufacturing business or activity that produces noxious matter or perceptible noise beyond the lot line. A home occupation permit from the Department of Community Development is required for any home-based business under § 26-491(12), but a business built around engine work, lifts, or power tools cannot meet these standards and will not qualify for one.

Violations & Fines

Operating an unpermitted home auto repair business, or one generating noise or noxious matter beyond the lot line, is grounds for permit denial or revocation and code enforcement under § 26-493 and § 26-28.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run an auto repair business out of my home in Neenah?
Not under the standards in § 26-491: mechanical equipment beyond ordinary domestic or hobby use is prohibited, which rules out auto repair as a home occupation.
What happens if my home business generates noise beyond my property line?
It violates § 26-491(9), which bars noxious matter or perceptible noise beyond the lot line, and can lead to permit denial or revocation by the City.
