Section 230-210-100 of the Zoning Ordinance, approved May 29, 2024 (Item #36440-3), lists the uses that can never be treated as a home occupation regardless of how small the operation is. Automobile and internal-combustion-equipment repair heads that list, alongside dispatch centers, equipment rental, taxi and limo services, tow truck services, restaurants, funeral services, and animal boarding. The same section also bars any home-based work that fails the general home-occupation standards in Section 270-40-40.270. Beyond that specific ban, every home occupation in the city must satisfy Section 230-210-10's requirement that the use stay accessory and subordinate to the residence, Section 230-210-70's prohibition on storing hazardous substances such as automotive fluids and solvents, and Section 230-210-80's requirement that all activity happen entirely inside the principal building or an allowed accessory building, never in a driveway or side yard.

Section 230-210-40 additionally forbids any home occupation that produces noise, odor, or vibration atypical of a residential neighborhood, which independently rules out running power tools or compressors for auto work. The Director of Licenses, Permits and Inspections enforces these standards under Section 280-30-10 and may inspect the premises at any reasonable hour under Section 280-40-10. A resident who wants to fix cars commercially must locate in a district that permits a motor vehicle repair garage, which under Section 240-30's parking schedule requires at least three customer spaces and three employee spaces per service bay, a scale that has no residential equivalent.
